Somero has a population of around 9,500, but in the summer months the town becomes much busier. This is because there are around 4,000 summer cottages (or mökkis) in the Somero region so as soon as the summer arrives the town is full of life.
One huge benefit of our summer visitors is that the town has lots of cafés. Some of these are only open during the summer months and others are open all year round. One of my favourites is on the roundabout opposite the S market. Apparently it has only been there for around 18 months, but it has a lovely homely feel to it and Riika, the lady who runs it, always has the time to say hello and exchange a few friendly words.
In France, when you are looking for somewhere to live, one of the first questions that many people ask is "How close is the nearest bakery?" To a French person, being within walking distance of the nearest Boulangerie is essential in order to stock up daily on fresh croissants and baguettes. In Finland most bread is bought from supermarkets, so you do not always have the luxury of a bakery close to where you live. We are lucky to have more than one bakery in Somero which make fresh bread and delicious cakes. I often pop into this café for a sandwich but usually end up ordering something sweet as well. These cakes are simply too good to resist....
